“The whole experience went really well,” Chapman said, after his first display in Pelham. “I got to meet some very nice people who were really interested in what I do.”
The Niagara native takes a different approach to shooting – taking a scientific approach behind the lens.
“I use satellites and monitor the altitude of the clouds to help predict such things as sunsets and the Northern Lights,” he said. “We use the same stuff as the weather meteorologists use, but actually follow the storm in person when we can.”
Although he prefers the term storm chaser, he is also a storm predictor.
Having studied weather from a young age, he often knows what will happen hours before a storm. Several years ago, he predicted 36 hours in advance that a tornado would touch down in Listowel – and sure enough it did.
“We always as a storm chasers pick a target area. Nine times out 10, there is never a tornado and it’s often just pretty severe weather. That particular just happened to be one that came together to form a tornado.”
Chapman says luck also plays a part.
“There is times we think we know it, but the weather does not cooperate.”
That’s where social media has moved in to allow for additional help in spotting a storm. Often keeping track of what’s happening across the country gives a better understanding of what’s coming towards Niagara, Chapman says.
The combination of technology and others help create his artwork. The story behind many of the photos on the wall are not only a moment captured, but a chase to find the next framed piece.
“I now appreciate that aspect (of photography) as I’m constantly trying to combine this weather with that weather to get the perfect shot.”
