News vs. Promotion

News outlets—especially community newspapers—are often approached by businesses and other organizations for help in publicizing an event or service.

Newspapers depend on promotional revenue to survive. In fact, newspapers are actually in the promotion business. Their business model depends on selling promotion (known as advertising) to support their news-gathering operation.

No company can afford to give away its product or service and expect to remain in business for very long. This is why the Voice, like many newspapers, does not generally run “news releases” from businesses or other organizations looking for free visibility.

Readers trust legitimate news organizations not to mislead them by running promotional material as news. Ironically, that’s why it can be so desirable to get an article in a newspaper regarding an event, product, or award—established media organizations confer unmatched credibility that social media, in particular, does not.

New Business Package

If you have a new business, service, or product that you’d like to promote, the Voice offers our New Business Package.

Our graphics team will design a compelling advertising campaign for your promotion, and approximately halfway through the ad run the paper will publish a news article—written by the Voice and not subject to advertiser vetting—summarizing your message to prospective customers.

Business Focus

For existing businesses, we offer Business Focus, with the same features as the New Business Package.

Business Spotlight

Finally, the Voice also offers Business Spotlight, a full page presentation at a discounted rate, with the company’s or organization’s ad occupying the bottom half, and submitted promotional copy from the advertiser running as a story in the top half.

Charitable organizations

The Voice does offer limited promotional space at no charge to bona fide charitable organizations, registered as charities with the applicable tax authorities.

While we do not generally promote upcoming events, we welcome photos of events already held such as cheque presentations, award ceremonies, and so on.

Be sure to include the first and last name of each person in the photo, the event or occasion, the date, and the photographer’s name if known.
